FOR ANDY WOLLEN

June 1991

Protect me, O God, from boredom so vain,
Give me a task with hustle and strain,
A challenge that calls my body and mind
To service through love of all mankind.

Take hold of the talents conferred in my genes,
Developed in school, and by other means,
And fill me with love that will not let go,
As to that task my life I bestow.

And when I am tired, and want to let down,
Open my eyes to needs all around;
Help me to feel what other folk feel;
Their inner concerns kindly reveal.

Then give me the grace to rise to the task,
The strong perseverance for which I now ask,
The whispered assurance that comes from your voice:
"Keep going, my child; you made a good choice."

It isn't for prominence, O Lord, I now pray;
But rather for grace to use every day.
Recounting, accepting, fulfilling your call,
Holding your hand as I give it my all.
